Mamamoo
The Story of Mamamoo
After Kal the cow, I desperately want to save a cow from slaughter
So I dedicated my life to helping animals
Desperate to save a cow we visited a cow farm and spoke to the owner who thought we were crazy to start with, then he understood what we wanted to do and he took us to his “odds and sods” department
In this area was an old cow (18 years old ) with a dying calf at her side. She had given birth to calves every year of her life that were either taken for meat or if a female, put back into the herd to breed )
Now she was too old to produce milk, so therefore destined for death
We looked at this huge old cow with bulging eyes and this scrawny little calf by her side. The farmer said that she would be “Burnt” in September, due to her age and BSE ( mad cow disease ) she could not be killed for meat…which again seems crazy, she could produce calves for the meat industry even though she personally could only be slaughtered and burnt.
We knew nothing about cows other than I loved them, but the thought of a huge cow and a dying calf terrified us… we left
No sooner than arriving home I could not get the vision out of my mind, and the next day we went back for her…
As we drove away we chatted about names… of course, it had to be “Mamamoo” We looked at our little girl “Storm” and said what shall we call the baby calf “Luvu” was her reply and it stuck :0)
We saved Mamamoo, baby Luvu, and a random Hefier, who reminded me of a bull I connected with years ago and who gave me my love for cows. As we drove away there was a real loud moo and I looked back and there was just one cow standing looking at us “Who’s that?” I asked the farmer
He replied “Her calf from last year.” “Keep her I’m coming back for her” and weeks later we collected Mamamoo’s previous calf “Freckles”
I only got just over a year with Mamamoo
But in that short time, she changed my life
And every animal that is on the sanctuary today is here because of her Mama was huge and I didn’t know much about cows, she would put her head down to bunt me but my love for this old lady grew. One day a cow rescuer told me that this was not aggression and that she was bowing to me as a mark of respect and I began to lose my fear of her. I would sit in the barn by her side and tears would fall as an overwhelming feeling of love came over me In time she would push her calf towards me and then step back and I knew she totally trusted me.
Every morning I would walk up the drive singing to her and her beautiful face would appear in the small stable window which would light up my heart. As time passed she became very arthritic and I knew that soon I would have to let her go
One day I was stood grooming her which she loved. Tears streamed as I would miss her so much. She looked me straight in the eyes, leaned over and gently licked my face. After 18 years in the industry, she truly grew to love me, she trusted me.
Soon after I let her go
My only regret is that I did not stand by her side as she passed, as my vet told me it would upset me to much
I sat at the house and I saw her fall down as she passed away
I asked for a sign from Mama that I would not forget her and the first thing I saw was a bunch of poppies around her body
And I knew that poppies were my connection to her
Mama sent me so many signs over the coming months
