Plant Based Sanctuary
The “Sanctuary”
We are situated in Tranmire which is in Whitby, set in the heart of the National Parks North Yorkshire moors, a very picturesque part of the world.
Our sanctuary is set within 50 acres of land and a good part of that is SSSI A Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) is a formal conservation designation. Usually, it describes an area that’s of particular interest to science due to the rare species of fauna or flora it contains – or even important geological or physiological features that may lie in its boundaries”.
A lot of the land was not maintained by the previous owners and we have been working hard with national parks to restore the areas. Last year we took on the huge task of re-digging a main ditch that had over the years become blocked and created a swamp over the land making it unusable. The ditch has worked a treat but we still have more work to do with the ditches this year to try and get the land working again as it is at present we would not feel comfortable letting our animals graze, but we are hoping by the end of this year we will of achieved enough to start working areas and bring back more plants and wildlife.
We are now home to around 300 animals, which come to us from all over. We rely heavily upon donations and this year we lost our much-loved sanctuary partner Kevin, which was a huge blow to us mentally as I lost a best friend, but also financially as Kev was a big part of the sanctuary and kept us going many times when we were struggling.
When Kevin was diagnosed with brain cancer I gave up my vegan cafe to be home to look after him, it was 2 very hard years but we gave him hope at a very dark time in his life.
We had to start a new business working from home to try and be more self sustaining on the sanctuary and also to create a business for us to, as we do not draw a wage from the sanctuary. So we created Ewe Love which is a separate entity to the sanctuary.
And we launched the sanctuary tours, sheep walking and sheep hugging along with the huts and pod on site.
In kevins memory we decided to let his side of the house to raise much needed funds for his cats and also to continue his valued work rescuining cats _ which will be open hopefully by end of this year for bookings.
The sanctuary is a non profit and all funds stsy in the account for the sanctuary works and rescues needs
